Sergey Gorshkov, né dans un village isolé en Sibérie, est un naturaliste-photographe profondément passionné par la faune sauvage de la Russie. À force d’écoute et d’obstination, il s’est imposé comme une figure emblématique du photo-reportage naturaliste, notamment grâce à son travail de longue haleine sur le tigre de l’Amour (ou tigre de Sibérie).
Son image la plus célèbre, intitulée « The Embrace » (« L’Étreinte »), a remporté le grand prix du prestigieux concours Wildlife Photographer of the Year en 2020. Dans ce cliché, une tigresse serre un ancien sapin de Manchourie, marquant son territoire par son odeur.
Mais cette photo n’est pas le fruit d’un simple instant décisif : elle est le résultat d’un engagement de plusieurs mois. En janvier 2019, Sergey installe discrètement un piège photo muni d’un capteur de mouvement, face à un arbre où étaient visibles des traces de tigres (poils, griffures, odeurs…). Il laissera ce dispositif sur place pendant plus de 10 mois, jusqu’au moment où la tigresse apparaît, dans la lumière froide d’une forêt sibérienne.
Ce travail illustre parfaitement l’éthique de Gorshkov : patience, humilité, respect de l’animal et de son milieu. Il ne cherche pas l’action spectaculaire, mais plutôt une connexion, presque spirituelle, avec le vivant.
Sergey Gorshkov©Par ailleurs, son engagement dépasse la photographie pure : il est cofondateur de l’Union russe des Photographes animaliers, et son œuvre contribue directement à la sensibilisation pour la conservation des espèces menacées. À travers ses images, il raconte une histoire plus large — celle du retour progressif du tigre de l’Amour dans certaines zones de l’Extrême-Orient russe, grâce aux efforts de protection mais aussi à la force symbolique de ce félin majestueux.
En choisissant Sergey Gorshkov comme naturaliste du mois de décembre, j’ai voulu mettre en lumière non seulement son art, mais aussi un message puissant : protéger la nature demande du temps, du dévouement — et parfois l’amour pur que traduit si bien « L’Étreinte ».
Encore aujourd’hui il montre au grand public des clichés totalement bluffant de ces félins élusifs dans leur superbe environnement.

Sergey Gorshkov, born in a remote Siberian village, is a deeply devoted wildlife photographer and naturalist. Through years of patient observation and unwavering dedication, he has become a key voice in documenting Russia’s wild landscapes — and particularly the elusive Amur tiger, also known as the Siberian tiger.
His most iconic image, titled “The Embrace”, won the Wildlife Photographer of the Year grand title in 2020. In the photograph, a tigress presses her body against an ancient Manchurian fir, scent-marking the tree in a tender, intimate moment.
But this shot is far from a lightning-fast snapshot — it is the culmination of months of perseverance. In January 2019, Gorshkov installed a hidden camera trap equipped with a motion sensor in front of a tree that bore clear signs of tiger activity (hair, scratch marks, scent). He left it in the field for over 10 months, enduring the brutal Siberian cold, waiting for the moment when the tigress would return.
Even today, he continues to reveal to the public truly breathtaking images of these elusive big cats in their stunning natural environment.
This work reflects Gorshkov’s deep respect for wildlife. He doesn’t seek a dramatic pose or a rare action, but rather a connection — a spiritual embrace between animal and forest. Beyond his art, he is also co-founder of the Russian Union of Wildlife Photographers, and his images play a vital role in conservation awareness.
Through his lens, Sergey tells a broader story: the gradual return of the Amur tiger in parts of Russia’s Far East, as protection efforts gather strength and as this majestic cat reclaims its place in the forest.
By choosing Sergey Gorshkov as naturalist of the month for December, I wanted to highlight not only his astonishing photographic talent, but also his message: safeguarding nature takes time, endurance — and, in many ways, a pure kind of love, just like the one embodied in “The Embrace.”
